disconcerning
i have a white hair management strategy.
basically, i strategically part my hair for maximum exposure of non-white hair growth. but i've been loathing my super long bangs lately and tonight decided to change the part to my right side.
then i watched the film Spider and painted my toenails.

when i went back to the bathroom, i noticed my hair.
specifically, i noticed white hair and i also noticed crazy wirey hair.

and, although i know white hair exists on my head, it's still a shock to see a cluster of them.
i'm predicting that tomorrow will be a witness to an entire day of bad hair. thank goodness i have an offsite client meeting at 9 in the morning to ramp up the morning hair angst.
oh yes, Spider was magnificent. a cinematic, ambient piece of storytelling. too bad his latest endeavour, Eastern Promises, was such a disappointment.

dinner with the family
this past wednesday, the usual suspects gathered at Jade Seafood Restaurant on Alexandra Road in Richmond for some food. it was... okay. the desert, a light broth of brown sugar and ginger with dates and dried longans was a big disappointment.
also, it seemed super loud so we didn't talk much which is unusual for my family. so, i'll let the pictures do the talking.
after taking this picture i asked my dad what he was thinking. his response: "I was wondering." fyi, that's a plate of smoked chicken infront of him. yummy.

not sure what to report except....

we're having a canada day un-bbq on tuesday, july 1st from 1pm to late
what's an un-bbq?
it's like a bbq with food and drink but without the use of the actual bbq.
funny thing is that a friend's bbq is currently sitting in our patio but i'm:
a) afraid of the propane and
b) feel that the square footage that would be lost to the bbq and the surrounding area due to the emanating heat don't make it a compelling enough reason to use it.
why am i afraid of the propane?
it's a dangerous gas i can't see.
despite my issues, there will be tons of food and drink and well selected music.
everyone is invited.
please rsvp.
btw, july 1st will also be rob's first day wherein he is no longer employed in the hospitality sector.

and.... i'm back
i made a last minute decision to visit 'the centre of the universe' aka toronto this weekend to join in on some Hive happenings and hookups at the NXNE music festival.
thankfully, my dad was able to score me a standby seat on the 1:15pm flight to toronto on friday. as well, my bosses (aka the bestest bosses in the world) were cool enough to allow me to take a last minute "take the rest of the day off" request.
i landed at 9pm, took a taxi to The Drake where the Ten Kens were performing. i setup our hd camera and got ready to film some fine indie rockin'.
after the show, we (terry and i) hung out with the band a bit then headed for some barely passable poutine at a denny's wannabe place called fran's. i also made the poor decision of ordering a fran-sized caesar drink and float.
at 2am we headed back to terry's friend's place to access the interwebs for the purpose of trying to find a hotel. but the fact that i was entirely exhausted and hotels i called were booked up led to terry's friend allowing us to crash in his place.
i was so tired that the fact that my bed consisted of lawn chair cushions didn't bother me.

saturday morning consisted of brunch with Ten Kens then a significant walk through half of toronto to catch the 3pm performance of Monotonix at the record store, Sonic Boom.

we managed to catch the naked bike ride during our sojourn.

we also saw this awesome art/craft piece which would be a wicked name for a band.

HEAR THIS, HEAR THIS: Monotonix is insane.
insanely genius, that is.

after their 30 minute set, we (terry, myself and 3 of the Ten Kens) just stood outside Sonic Boom SIMPLY UNABLE TO UTTER COHERENT THOUGHTS. i'm not kidding. just watch one of their shows on youtube and you might understand a fraction of it. i filmed 2 of their songs and may put it up.

after this, we hung out with a Ten Ken briefly then, because we managed to find a 4 start hotel room at a deeply discounted price from hotwire.com, we spent the rest of the evening showering, lying in our beds and watching Pretty in Pink. we needed to restup because that night (technically sunday morning) we had to catch the 2am Ladyhawk show.
yes, 2am! yes, Ladyhawk!
it was one of the more crazy shows i've ever been apart of. the main problem here was that i was directly infront of the stage cuz i had this stupid idea of filming their show. i don't even know why i did it. like, don't we have enough footage of them?
anyways, it was crazy because of the mosh pit that kept slamming into me, because of the beer that people kept splashing into the crowd, because of the boiling temperature at the venue.
so we got back to our room just after 3am and crashed.
this morning, i got up, showered, took a taxi to the airport and came home at which time i strolled along commercial drive's car-free day.
i feel pretty lucky to have experienced such an awesome weekend.

status is: need more pillow time
for the past 3 days/nights, we've been coming home much beyond our bedtimes. here's a recount.
. . .TONIGHT. . .
rob and i just came home from catching no kids at the magnetic north festival.
THEY WERE FREAKING AWESOME.
we're talking high energy, tight playing and nick at his best. i've heard that nick rarely plays vancouver so it was a treat to see him live and really enjoying himself.
the encore was nick performing a sade cover. nick, julia and justin were simply brilliant tonight.

. . .LAST NIGHT. . .
rob and i were extras in a scene for terry's feature film he is shooting this month. the film is called red rooster and it's looking very cool.
rob, kelly and i ended up as a 'party group' standing right next to the main actor. i knew i should have elected to be an extra that stands in the corner, next to other extras. so, because of where we were standing we had to stay longer so that when the camera films the other angle for that same scene, we're still standing there fake talking and pretending we're friends.
the 3 of us got up to no good during the in between take lulls. see rob and kelly affecting poses that are successful for picking up chicks/guys at a bar.
fun times even though we didn't get home until 1:30am.

. . .THE NIGHT BEFORE LAST. . .
tuesday night we caught the Black Angels at Richards on Richards and didn't make it home until 12:30am. i really enjoyed the first part of the show and there were many good moments but during the second half, i felt the songs sounding not very distinct.
but i'm glad i went.

- i need to get off my ass on the pilot for the 'recording studios across canada' web series. we need to film it in july.
- we've expressed interest in filming the new pornographer's curated music festival called The Stanley Park Singing Exhibition. now we're just waiting to hear back from the festival organizer.
- i need to start and finish the wedding video editing for rob's sister's wedding of 2 weeks ago.
- i need to keep working on the outline to my feature. i've got some really exciting ideas that i need to review and edit and review and edit...
so, we have a few projects to keep us busy for the summer. once summer decides to visit vancouver.

i spend a maximum of 15 minutes on my hair so i had some fun this evening putting my hair up in rollers.

dinner with the family
my mom, my dad, my brother, his wife, my nephew, and rob converged on Chen Shanghai Restaurant off Park Place in Richmond tonight.
and yes, the xiao long bao was really good but everything else was WAY TOO SALTY. we all decided the restaurant was attempting to cater to the new immigrant from China which prefers super salty foods.
let me just say this: rob didn't ask for soy sauce.

look at what i made my mom do; the heart symbol from 'lost in translation'

then afterwards, we visited my grandfather (my mom's dad) who lives close to steveston in richmond. it was a very nice visit. my 'jojo' (my mom's younger brother) was there, too.

and look what i found in my grandfather's room, a picture of my brother and i that i don't ever remember seeing. i think it's super cute.

spring cleaning (2 of 2)
for the asian titles, i must warn you all that i have doubts that these are legitimate copies since they were very inexpensive when i bought them in richmond.
. . CHINESE TITLES . .
1. & 2. Election (2005) & Election 2 (2006)
Election 2 on IMDB
As election time nears, current Triad chairman Lok (Yam) faces competition from his godsons. At the same time, Jimmy (Koo) looks to increase his business relations with mainland China. --IMDB

3. Chinese Ghost Story
Info on film
Leslie Cheung stars as Ning, a meek tax collector who finds himself involved in a wacky supernatural romance. He's slated to become a victim to enchanting ghost Nie (Joey Wong), who's bound to an evil tree demon (Lau Siu-Ming) who feed on men's souls. Ning's soul is slated for consumption, but due to a variety of circumstances, he's prevented from becoming soul food. Even more, the comely Nie grows to care for Ning, and vice versa. Then roving ghostbuster Wu Ma shows up to take down spirits with his nifty Taoist methods. There's also impomptu singing, sumptuous production design, and a tree demon with an extraordinarily long tongue. --Love HK Film

4. Peking Opera Blues
Info on film
This slapstick comedy drama stars three of Hong Kong's most attractive and popular actresses of their time: Brigitte Lin is the daughter of a general, Cherie Chung is a petty thief, and Sally Yip is the daughter of the manager of the Beijing Opera theater. The story is set in 1911 when the Chinese revolution overthrew the monarchy and established a republic. The general's daughter has to steal an important document from her father's safe in order to help out the guerrillas who are fighting for the republic. Her exploits and those of her two friends flow back and forth between the Imperial Palace and the theater of the Beijing Opera. Action, farce, and political satire tumble over each other as the story leads up to its dizzying rooftop climax. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

. . JAPANESE TITLE . .
5. Battle Royale (2001)
Battle Royale website
With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as a Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates. --Nikki Disney

9. The President's Last Bang (2005)
on IMDB
Review by film blogger
Trailer
The President's Last Bang is an unabashedly leftist take on a dark period in Korea's history. Set (almost) entirely on the day of President Park Chung Hee's assassination in 1979, the film is an out and out attack on his regime, and paints the former president as a drunken lech with an unhealthy obsession with the Japanese. ~ Like Anna Karina's Sweater

10. Flower Island (2001)
Film info
From shocking and sad to funny and beautiful, from tears to laughter, from bleak reality to poetic fantasy; Song Il-gon enters Korean Cinema with a bang after a few acclaimed short films (Liver and Potato and The Picnic). Time will tell if his impact will be as powerful as Hur Jin-ho's first feature (Christmas in August), but Flower Island promises great things for the future of Cinema in Korea, and even the World. ~ I Love HK Film

some recovering
last night was a bit debaucherous in the culinary-sense.
rob, ken, bill and i dined at boneta, which i declare to be the 'best room in the city.'
everything, and i mean everything was perfect at boneta:
- our server was the most sincerely nice and beautiful person in the whole place.
- we were lucky enough to receive an amuse bouche from the chef which was (i think) a leek-based concentrated soup with foam made of the same.
- two of the owners who happened to be working last visited our table (along with all the other tables) and were gracious and really cared about our meal.
- the food was fan-freaking-tastic. i had an asparagus risotto with spot prawns but i was a bit jealous of bill's scallops and oxtail meal. rob had the rack of lamb and declared it was the best he's ever had. then ken, oh ken, he ordered the duck breast and after he generously shared a piece with the rest of us, we had to agree that it was probably the world's best duck to ever be prepared.
- all our wines and dessert ports/sherries were also perfect and a joy to consume.
after boneta, we walked the half block to salt and was lucky enough to score some seats in the cellar. we had more amazing wine and great conversation.
hence, we had a very late start today and ended up at the gallery cafe at the vancouver art gallery. i can't believe this place isn't more busy. the food is of such a high quality, they're licensed and it's basically this oasis in the middle of the city with the most eden of settings which includes the vivaldi being played (gently) throughout the patio.
we happened to take some equally gentle photos at the gallery cafe.
