not likely
chinese director, chen kaige (who made Farewell My Concubine in 1993), has a new film out entitled Forever Enthralled.
Forever Enthralled, like Farewell My Concubine, is about the chinese opera set against political upheaval in china. like, when isn't there political upheaval in china?
anyways, this is a super long trailer. only the first 2 minutes is worth watching for it's gorgeous cinematography.
so what do you think are the chances that i can get this film to screen at the vancouver asian film festival this year?

oh my god, what have i done!?!
today, UNEXPECTEDLY, i was asked if i would like to be a programmer for the vancouver asian film festival.
rejoicing was had. the happy dance was performed, emotionally anyways.
BUT......I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING
i remember telling those around me, during the conclusion of last year's vaff, that i didn't think i would be doing that again. it was a neat experience for sure. i got to create a 30 second commercial that aired on CityTV and as well as a 40 second intro that played before each and every film that screened at vaff.
awesome. experience. exposure.
yes, all these.
but it was more work than i had expected and i was planning on focusing on my own projects for 2009.
so, when i was asked (out of the blue) to be a programmer, which i had secretly coveted as a role, i (with great sincerity) yelled out: I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK
which is true because i thought they would ask me to do the same technical stuff i did last year.
great news, right? i got my secret wish except... oh my god, what have i gotten myself into? i suddenly realized that i'll be spending UNTOLD HOURS watching film submissions. and maybe some of them will be good. maybe. we're talking waaay more hours than being a plain old technical coordinator.
the upside is: MY NEW FOUND POWER.
co-workers can expect me to unexpectedly blurt out at random times:
your film submission is DENIED.
let the LORDING begin.

viewings
i managed to watch some films in the past few weeks and have this to say about them:
32 Short Films About Glen Gould (1993)
-- yes yes, i should be ashamed for not already having viewed this 'canadian masterpiece.'
-- i saw it at the pacific cinematheque last night with a mostly affluent, white crowd where there were KNOWING LAUGHS and 'hmms' heard in great excess. this created (to me) an elitist atmosphere where i felt that i was intentionally left out of an inside joke.
-- elitist mood aside, i could appreciate what the directors where trying to do in creating a piece of film that was a reflection of the creative genius that the film was documenting BUT... i wasn't super blown away by it.
-- i was especially NOT IMPRESSED by the mediocre cinematography (and cheap film stock) and by the POOR dialog replacement.
-- yah, blah
Encounters at the end of the World (2007)
-- this was a dvd rental
-- directed by the venerable Werner Herzog who has made some great stuff in the past
-- this documentary is about the people who live/work in antarctica
-- there were some very beautiful underwater shots but the doc lacked a strong structure and kinda meandered.
-- blah
Doubt (2008)
-- saw this at Tinseltown 2 weeks ago
-- oh my god, DON'T SEE THIS WASTE OF MONEY AND TALENT
-- dialog sucked, directing sucked, cinematography was mediocre, story was weak
-- horrible
Army of Darkness (1992)
-- bruce campbell is FREAKING AWESOME
-- wonderful

#20 bus
on some of the buses, an automated voice announces the next stop.
the voice is female.
the words seem strung together by vowels and consonants rather than recorded in whole.
it sounds robotic.
and when i ride a #20 bus with the automated announcements, the stop "abbott street" sounds like "addict street" which is rather unfortunate given the neighbourhood.
i listen for it every time.

storm watching in tofino
spent this past week in tofino during storm watching season. this is tricky marketing at its best, people.
tofino's main draw is its good surfing and i think some very smart marketing types came up with a reason to NOT ONLY compel tourists to visit during non-surf season (aka storm watching season) BUT ALSO convince tourists that it's worth paying premium to WATCH HARSH WIND AND RAIN.
but wait, it's harsh wind and rain... ON THE BEACH.
AHA - we have them now! Yes.
well, there was 1 night of the storming but since it happened mostly while i was sleeping, i guess i didn't get my money's worth.
otherwise, i had a really nice time in tofino: eating yummy scallops at shelter restaurant, walking the beach, enjoying quail at sobo, taking pictures at glice bay, dining on lamb at raincoast cafe, getting my new deck boots soaked by an unexpected wave, and experiencing food heaven at the wickaninnish inn restaurant.

here are a couple that didn't make the artsy cut:
on jan 1st, at the beach at pacific sands where we stayed, 3 people decided to do the new year's dive into very chilly waters.
a little boy is hesitating before making the jump over a patch of water. don't call the child protection dept, his mom is just out of frame.
